Charles has been a member of Rottenberg Lipman Rich since March 2002. He devotes his practice to all aspects of commercial and high-end residential real estate, financing, cooperative and condominium law and general business transactional work. He represents both institutional clients and private individuals and investors in all aspects of commercial real estate practice, including sales and acquisitions of commercial properties, drafting and negotiation of commercial leases and related agreements, negotiation of joint venture agreements and construction and development agreements. He also represents New York cooperatives and condominium boards in various capacities and presently serves on the Board of Managers of his own downtown condominium building.
Charles’ recent matters include the successful representation of:
- A large international law firm as its outside real estate counsel for all leasing and property portfolio matters, including significant leasing and subleasing transactions in both New York City and Washington, D.C.
- A digital travel and hospitality services company in multiple US real estate leasing locations.
- A large NYC residential condominium building in its successful amendment to its by-laws to convert to a “non-smoking” condominium.
- Various high-net-worth individuals in the purchase and sale of high-end, luxury residential properties in New York City.
- Individual real estate owners in the negotiation and resolution of real estate family ownership disputes.
- An institutional fund investor as the major capital partner in various New York real estate investment and development projects.
- A variety of retail service businesses, restaurants, bars and event spaces in their leasing of various U.S. site locations
- Real estate owners and operators in the acquisition, sale and financing of commercial real estate assets
- A European pension fund in all leasing and asset management matters for a NYC Class A office building.
- A large commercial bank in the development of multi-state leasing and asset management forms for its portfolio of REO assets.
Charles is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York State Bar Association and American Bar Associations and has served on various real estate committees. Since 1998, he has served on the Board of Trustees of the Brotherhood Synagogue a New York City landmarked building located in Manhattan’s historic Gramercy Park neighborhood, and has served in various leadership positions, including Chairman of the Board for a three-year term.
He received his B.A. degree in 1982 from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was the recipient of the 1982 Bowl Award, a men’s senior class leadership award, and his J.D. cum laude in 1985 from the Boston University School of Law. Charles is admitted to practice in New York and before the United States Supreme Court.
